Frequently asked questions

  • Do you just support the visual arts?

No, we are open to all sorts of things happening within the space, however we want to compliment and not compete with other local cultural organisations and what they offer and there are many that are better suited and more experienced in programming music and performance based activities. But try us, if it’s a good fit we’re open to it and if we think somewhere else might be a better option for you we’ll put you in touch.

  • Can I come visit?

We can’t wait to open the doors fully and be able to welcome you all in on a day to day basis, but sadly we’re not at that point just yet. We have begun to run activities in the space and it is available for bookings but at the moment it is by appointment only. This is down in part to staffing but also there are a number of things to do with security and safeguarding that we need to have in place before we will be fully open to the public. This will be a gradual thing so bare with us and keep an eye on here and / or join our mailing list for updates.

  • How do I get involved?

Go to our opportunities page if you have time / energy / resources / materials you would like to donate or if you are interested in running activities.

  • Can I do work experience with you?

At the moment we are a very small team and we are still developing how the space and organisation in general will run day to day so we are not right now in a position to offer work experience positions, but we definitely will be in the future!

  • What do you pay artists?

We strongly believe in paying artists fairly for their time, expertise and experience, and being as transparent about this as possible. With this in mind this is what we pay artist to deliver activities in the space.

    Workshops delivery

    Established artist - £200 - £250 a day
    Emerging artist - £150 - £200 a day

    Established artist - £75 - £100 - 2 hour session
    Emerging artist - £50 - £75 - 2 hour session

STUDIO FAQs

Who can rent a studio?

The studios that we offer for hire are for local visual artists from any discipline. For more info click here.

How long can I have a studio for?

Initial term of one year which will be reviewed annually depending on demand for the spaces.

When can I access the building?

We allow 24 / 7 access to the building for studio holders

How have you worked out the costs for the studios and where does the money go?

The studios are for rent for £1.50 per square foot + £30. For a city centre location with good facilities and lots of perks we think this is fair. The money goes towards covering costs of the building (utilities, refuge collection, cleaning, insurance, staffing, etc…). Any money left over goes directly towards providing activities and opportunities for the community. It is important to note that there will be opportunities for resident artists to deliver paid workshops and activities in the space which can contribute towards or cover the costs of the monthly studio hire, and for artists who really engage with the ethos and approach of Positive Light Projects, to even profit from being here!

Can I share a studio?

Potentially. This does create added security and responsibility issues so there may be a small additional cost, but we are open to discussions.

space hire

Can I hire the space weekends and evenings?

Yes is the short answer but it does require a member of our team to be here, let you in, lock up etc.. so it will depend on who is available, how long you need it for and what the activities taking place are. Please do get in touch if you want to discuss your plans.

Why does the workshop space hire cost what it does?

Unlike many other community and arts spaces in Exeter who have a number of different size rooms for hire at different costs, we basically have one massive room and one smaller one, so we are not able to bring in as much income from space hire to run and maintain the building as others, which accounts for the slightly higher hourly and day rate of the large workshop space.

Can I hire the space for an exhibition?

Maybe! The gallery space that we have in the building will have a focus on socially engaged community based practice - primarily artwork made in the space itself by the groups that we will be interacting with, but also work made by socially engaged artists who we invite into the space which explores themes around this kind of approach to art and photography that can speak to and inspire audiences and start conversations around and highlight the importance of more participatory and collaborative approaches. We will be not acting as a gallery space for hire as such, but more of a creative hub that produces, showcases and commissions work which aligns with our ethos, aims and ambitions as an organisation. If your work or project falls within these contexts and you would like to talk further please do get in touch.
